Polarographic Reduction of Benzoate in Acet, pnitrile

چکیده

The polarographic wave observed for acetonitrile solutions of benzoic acid is due to reduction of the acid proton: the apparent diffusion current constant for the wave increases with concentration of benzoic acid as expected for the reduction of the acidic proton of a slightly dissociated acid. No wave was observed for ethyl benzoate. The situation in respect to the electrochemical reduction of benzoic acid and the benzoate functionality at the dropping mercury electrode is not entirely clear. The reduction wave observed for benzoic acid in unbuffered aqueous solution would seem to be due to the reduction of hydrogen ion; the acid is not reduced in buffered aqueous media [1]. On the other hand, there seems to be some uncertainty in the literature (d. below) due to the work of Stackelberg and Stracke [2], who apparently presented evidence for the reduction of benzoic acid in 75"/0 dioxane, which was 0.05 Min Et 4NBr. In the latter medium, benzoic acid itself gave two waves (Table 1), tetraethylammonium benzoate also gave two waves, but ethyl benzoate gave only one wave. Stackelberg and Stracke wanted to assign the first benzoic acid wave to a hydrogen-ion reduction but were deterred by the presence of the wave in the tetraethylammonium salt. The possible presence of free benzoic acid in the salt and ester or its formation during test solution preparation was apparently not considered. In earlier work, Wawzonek and co-workers [3] had referred to the reduction of ethyl benzoate in 50"/0 dioxane solution (0.1 Min n-Bu4NI) (Et/2 ;= -2.18 v . vs , S. C. E.; i dI C = 7.62) and had implied that benzoic acid might be reduced (E l / 2 = -1.87 v . vs , S.C.E.; idlC = 2.12). The implied polarographic reduction of the benzoate functionality, apparently based on the work of Stackelberg and Stracke, is indicated in several standard works, e.g., references [4], [5] and [6]. POLAROGRAPHIC AND POTENTIOSTATIC REDUCTION OF CARBODIIMIDES: A MECHANISTIC STUDY

The polarographic reduction of aromatic carbodiimides in anhydrous aprotic solvents goes through a carbene intermediate by a diffusion controlled process in two one-electron steps. The first step is the rate-determining step and converts the carbodiirnide to a radical anion (6) that reduces further by a fast one-electron step to a carbene dianion intermediate (7). This abstracts an oxygen, ...

Synergistic Influence of Benzoate Ions on Inhibition of Corrosion of Mild Steel in 0.5m Sulfuric Acid by Benzotriazole

The influence of benzoate anions on the corrosion inhibition effect of benzotriazole (BTA) for mild steel in sulfuric acid has been investigated. The investigation was carried out by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization techniques. The addition of benzoate ions greatly enhances the inhibition efficiency of BTA in a synergistic manner. This effect has bee...

Polarographic Reduction of Hydrogen Ion in Non-aqueous Solvents

Sommary-_The polarographic reduction of hydrogen ion, furnished by dissociation of a Brransted acid or present in the undissociated Brsnsted acid, is reviewed for the situation where a solvent other than water is involved. INTRODUCTION THE electrochemical reduction of hydrogen ion in aqueous solution has long been a major problem in electrochemistry, as indicated by the voluminous literature on...

Effects of emamectin benzoate combined with acetamiprid, eforia and hexaflumuron against Tuta absoluta (Lep.: Gelechiidae)

Tomato leafminer, Tuta absoluta Meyrick (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) is one of the most destructive pests of tomato in many parts of the world including Iran. The toxicity of emamectin benzoate alone and combined with acetamiprid, eforia (thiamethoxam + lambda-cyhalotrin) and hexaflumuron was evaluated against 2nd instar larvae of Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) under 25 ± 1 °C, the relative humidity of ...

Antepartum continuous epidural ropivacaine therapy reduces uterine artery vascular resistance in pre-eclampsia: a randomized, dose-ranging, placebo-controlled study.

BACKGROUND No therapy is currently available to improve the reduced uteroplacental blood flow (UPBF) that characterizes pre-eclampsia. We hypothesized that sympathectomy induced by epidural local anaesthesia reduces uterine vascular resistance (which is inversely correlated with UPBF) in pre-eclampsia. METHODS Ten pregnant women between 24 and 32 weeks of gestation with pre-eclampsia and uter...
